About The Sonia Sumar Method
Yoga for the Special Child®, LLC (YSC) trainings provide comprehensive and essential tools for teaching yoga to children with special needs. Programmes are taught by internationally renowned Yoga therapist and author Sonia Sumar and her team of trainers, whose innovative teaching methods have been improving the lives of children and adults with special needs for over 40 years. This is a 95-hour Children’s Yoga Teacher Training Programme taught over two parts:
Part 1 targets infants and children aged 0-12 years
Part 2 emphasises working with teens and young adults 13+ years
About YSC Part 2
The Part 2 course further expands on the techniques learned in Basic 1 with special emphasis on working with teens and young adults, but also refining your skills to work with kids from 0-12 years. The course also introduces teaching the method to small groups of children with special needs as well.
Note: Participants are expected to have had some experience teaching at least 2 hours of Yoga for the Special Child® (i.e. 4 half-hour classes). Participants will bring at least one video of one of these half hour sessions/classes to the course for feedback. (Note: video must be compatible with
Windows Media Player or Quick time). A video of any student of any age is acceptable but a session with an older child is encouraged.
Review the four stages of development and receive feedback from Sonia regarding the videos each student recorded working with a child with special needs using Yoga for the Special Child - The Sonia Sumar Method
Discuss theory and practice of working with older students 13 and above
Describe physiological and psychological benefits of yoga on older children and young
Learn challenges and solutions for working with adolescents and teens
Learn criteria and structure of group classes
Provide opportunity for feedback and guidance on specific case studies
Upon successful completion of both Part 1 & Part 2, participants will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment for the Yoga for the Special Child® Basic Certification. This satisfies the 95 contact hours for Yoga Alliance RCYT (Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher).**
After Part 1 and 2, you will not be certified to teach Yoga for the Special Child® to other teachers, but to teach yoga classes to all ages children using the Sonia Sumar Method.
What you need to know before you register…
Completion of the Yoga for the Special Child Part 1 + 2-hours teaching experience + recorded video session of your class using Yoga for the Special Child - The Sonia Sumar Method (see above).
REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION
YSC programs requires regular attendance and commitment.
Attendance: Students must attend all training hours to receive certification. There are no make up hours or exceptions.
Video Class: Your video must be of you teaching the Sonia Sumar Method. No other methods or techniques will be evaluated.
DATES & TIME
YSC Part 2: November 27 to December 3, 2019 - 8:00am to 5:00pm daily

FLIGHTS, ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
Participants will be responsible for their flights, meals and accommodations. The nearest airport is Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). There are many reasonably priced hotels and accommodations. If you need a room with disabled access, please remember to mention it at the time you make your reservation. Hersha is happy to make recommendations and provide assistance when booking.
WHAT TO WEAR & BRING
Please come in comfortable, loose-fitting clothes (allowing you to move freely during Yoga). The instructor will be providing some teaching materials, however participants are required to bring the following:
A notebook and writing materials
A Yoga mat & cushions
Video presentation in the formats mentioned above.
To confirm your reservation, please make full payment. Payment must be received by the registration deadline prior to program start date to confirm your space.
All payments made are non-refundable, unless the program is canceled by Yoga For The Special Child (YSC), in which event you will receive a full refund minus administration fee of HK$680. However YSC or Hersha Yoga shall not be responsible for refunding airline tickets or hotels under any circumstances.
If registrant cancels 10 or more days before the program start date, by way of YSC receiving notice from registrant within that time, the sum of HK$800 shall be deducted by YSC as an expense of administration. Any balance paid in excess of HK$800 shall be held for registrant without interest, and may be applied by registrant to another program within one year of cancellation. If not applied within one year, all monies paid shall be forfeited.
If registrant cancels less than 10 days before the program start date, the deposit of HK$2800 shall be deducted by YSC as an expense of administration. Any balance paid in excess of HK$2800 shall be held by YSC without interest, and may be applied by registrant to another program within one year of cancellation. If not applied within one year, all monies paid shall be forfeited.
Barring a medical emergency, no refund will be issued to participants after the Program begins.
No Certificate or License will be issued to any participant who fails to attend the complete program. There are no exceptions.
The teacher training experience can be a time of deep emotional connection for some people. Though this process is healing, it can also be stressful. If you have any history of mental illness i.e. depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder or any form of psychosis, it would be very helpful for your teacher to know in order to be sensitive to your needs.
