Information for Beginners
If you've never taken a yoga class before, please remember that flexibility is a result, not a requirement. Hersha's classes are based on the Integral Yoga system by Sri Swami Satchidananda.  A typical yoga class (known as Hatha Yoga) is predominantly concerned with the physical development of an individual. Yoga classes with Hersha consists of the following:

• Asanas (Bodily Postures)
• Deep Relaxation
• Pranayama (Breath Control)
• Mental Concentration

When taking a Hatha Yoga class for the first time, you will be required to fill out a registration form to inform Hersha about your current physical condition. Also, it is important to remember the following tips:

  • If you have any physical limitations, high blood pressure, had surgery recently, or are a woman who is menstruating or think you might be pregnant, please see the instructor before class.
  • Please use a yoga mat or towel in class.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing and remove any jewelry or any other restrictive items. Students may prefer to remove glasses and hard contact lenses before class (especially during the eye movements). Soft contact lenses are okay.
  • Do not eat at least two hours before Hatha Yoga. The body stops digesting while performing the asanas. Also, it is uncomfortable to perform Hatha Yoga on a full stomach. Drinking a little warm water beforehand will help with elimination. People with blood sugar difficulties can have a little juice an hour before or maybe some soft fruit that will pass through the stomach quickly.

    MORE ABOUT YOGA

Yoga postures (known as asanas in Sanskrit) are not exercise. The word “exercise” tends to give the idea of a practice done with quick movement and/or with a measure of strain involved. Asana simply means posture. Maharishi Patanjali Bhagavan (also known as the Father of Yoga), defines asana as a posture or pose that gives steadiness and comfort.

Symptoms of old age, such as wrinkles and poor complexion can be caused by poor circulation of the blood. Poor circulation leaves a lot of toxins and other waste matter in various parts of the body. Once blood circulation is enriched, this foreign matter is washed out and eliminated, giving the body a young look and feel. As the Yoga asanas and pranayama are practiced, blood circulation is improved and individuals will be able to experience a more supple and relaxed body, increased vitality, radiant health and help in curing physical illness.
    Hersha's tenets for peace:

Breathe Deeply; Live Happily; Serve Readily; Love Unconditionally
