Yoga is for everyone!

One of the first yoga classes I taught after graduating from my 200-hour teacher training was at the Integral Yoga Institute in New York City. I was a substitute for a Basic 1 Hatha class, and just before I was ready to begin, in walked a lady with a wooden leg.

Worried, I went up to her to explain that I had no idea how to accommodate her in the class. She smiled and said, "Relax honey, just watch me and you'll learn a thing or two."

I couldn't stop staring at how marvellous she looked manipulating her prosthetic through the Sun Salutation series.

I was a changed woman... a changed yoga teacher. But I didn't know it at the time.

It has been 16 years since that past event. Here I am teaching yoga to people with disabilities. The Indian Consulate & Asia Society Hong Kong Centre have requested that as part of the Integral Yoga Hong Kong sangha, I offer an Accessible Yoga class.

Saturday June 17th, from 11:00am to 12:15pm at the Asia Society Hong Kong Centre in Admiralty:

I never caught that woman's name. In fact I never saw her again, but the memory of her remains clear in my mind and my gratitude to her for planting an important seed overflows to this day.

So, to show you just how accessible yoga is, I'd like to share with you a chair yoga sun salutation series, performed alongside the classic Integral Yoga Hatha 1 Surya Namaskar. Thanks to Katia Bacon and Lavi Kris Mahtani for starring in this video.
