Recognizing special needs...
My sister-in-law Shanalle, who I hold in very high esteem, recently released a video on YouTube, showcasing her daughter, Talia’s progress over the past four years (http://youtu.be/TySNvFONuzk). It was such an amazing video, that all those I shared it with were profoundly moved by it. The most amazing thing about Talia’s story is the courage of her family. Despite their emotional hardships, and the ups and downs of her health and wellbeing, they consider everyday with her to be a blessing. They use unconditional love and with that love they work miracles. Wherever they go, she goes... no matter where.
Observing Shanalle with her daughter and being by her side for the first two years, I have learnt a lot. Despite Shanalle’s busy schedule taking care of three kids (one of them being a special needs child), she has started a website which is an online resource for parents of special needs children (www.onyom.com). It’s a place where parents don’t feel alone and can get advice and support from like-minded parents from around the world.
Since Talia came in to my life, I was inspired to do something to help children and families of special needs. As the majority of my experience is with teaching yoga, I have been studying Yoga Therapy for Special Needs Children. I have volunteered at the Jockey Club Sarah Roe School for the past few months and have recently accepted a part-time position there. I am so inspired by how the children are encouraged to reach their maximum potential.
As I am relatively new there, I am learning about how some children couldn’t walk or talk when they started school... and amazed that these same children are communicating and running about in the most wonderful way. What I am coming to realize is that these children are truly special in that they can reach limits beyond what we can imagine them to do. Many times, our special children seem so fragile that we want to protect them to the best of our ability, but seeing children being encouraged to become more independent is an amazing thing. These kids respond so well to that, and the joy and confidence they get when they accomplish even the smallest task is priceless.
Shani never feels sorry for herself. She views Talia as a blessing and an angel. She has broken through boundaries that she never envisioned herself doing before. Talia is a happy child with a beautiful life... she is special from the inside out. So are all children who have special needs.
In the coming months, I would like to offer more information and resources for parents of Hong Kong who have a special needs child in their lives.
